I slept like a log my whole life until I hit menopause. Now I can’t sleep all night; I wake up at least twice a night. I’ve heard that insomnia during and after menopause is an evolutionary tool – as grandmothers are expected to guard cave entrances all night so parents can sleep.
So I’m guarding the cave entrance from wild animals – which sounds more glamorous than tossing and turning all night long.
sleep is good for you
There was a time when not sleeping was considered cool. Margaret Thatcher famously slept only five hours a night. Madonna would say “When you die you can sleep”. But Thatcher eventually suffered from dementia and other health problems, possibly caused by years of sleep deprivation (and the intense stress of a decade as prime minister). Madonna also doesn’t look healthy, leading people to believe that being driven and ambitious may be bad for your health.
On the other hand, sleeping too much can also be a sign of poor health and depression. Although teenagers do need a lot of sleep. I remember when I was that age I had no problem sleeping until 2pm. I’m not lazy. I need it.
What is sleep?
This is an interesting article Deep sleep. Sleep is divided into several stages: non-rapid eye movement sleep and rapid eye movement sleep. This stands for rapid eye movement. REM sleep is when you dream. I rarely remember my dreams, but when I do, I find that I sleep better. Oddly enough, I’ve never had nightmares.
How to sleep better:
- Buy a good mattress. This is crucial. I recently received an email Simba mattress. It is both strong and soft. It comes in a box and is vacuum packed for easy portability. Once you put it on your bed, it takes a few hours to fully expand to its final elasticity, but you can sleep on it within two hours.
- There is cotton or linen Sheets and covers. It is important to change your sheets regularly (at least once a week). I always sleep better the first night in clean sheets.
- A good pillow. i have one anti snoring pillow. I used to have a lot of feather pillows but found that I slept better with just a firm foam pillow, e.g. This one is from Simba. Turns out I have allergies. I just changed the duvet three seasons duvet These are two sandwiched together, one spring and one autumn. I’ll report back. I like duvets A little bigger than the bed. It looks more luxurious when it hangs down the sides.
- sleep hygiene – I can’t do this. I live alone and I need my phone and laptop by my side. Recent reports suggest that sleep hygiene concerns are untrue in any case.
- pillow spray – This really helps. For example, spray some lavender oil on your pillow.
- Supplements: During my pregnancy I realized I had a magnesium deficiency. This also affects sleep so I will try taking more magnesium.
- Take a shower at night Relax your muscles. Especially if you have been physically active during the day. One of the modern sleep problems is that we don’t move enough. We were tired, but not really physically tired. But, that being said, you know you have a problem when you’re active all day but still can’t sleep.
- dark. I recently installed the cheap blackout blinds. Not having a darkroom will affect your fertility. This is why we feel less sleepy in the summer. I was once in the Shetland Islands during the “dark nights” of mid-summer. It only got dark for a few hours. I felt jittery.
- Stop consuming caffeine. I don’t think caffeine affects me too much, but starting around 6pm I started drinking rooibos and herbal tea. No coffee.
- Cotton pajamas. Once you go through menopause, no one tells you that you won’t be wearing polo collars for ten years. Thin cotton nightgown Or pajamas are the problem. i got my daddy these pajamas At Desmond and Dempsey. If it’s really hot, wear “Aussie pajamas” – ie pajamas washed in cold water. This will keep you cool for hours.
- cold bedroom It’s crucial to me. I’d rather have a cold room and a decent duvet in the winter. If I turn on the heat at night, my nose gets clogged. I think ventilation is an important aspect of good housing and is one of the reasons I avoid double glazing, even though it is the new eco-green practice. In the summer I use a fan. Buy them at Christmas when no one is thinking about fans. (The same goes for buying coats in the summer). I bought my metal vintage fan in the new year sale. eventually i will invest ceiling fanto create a “Raffles” appearance in Singapore.
- Mattress protectors and electric blankets: I started using electric blankets and a cozy mattress protector in the winter, especially now that I rarely turn on the heating due to the energy crisis.
