The featured Corsair was built from the winter F4U-5NL night fighter and rolled down on the production line in Dallas, Texas on December 31, 1950. In May 1951, it was assigned to Naval Compound Squadron 3 (VC-3) and was given the tail code “NP”. By early 1952, the aircraft had been transported to Japan and transferred to Marine Support Squadron 1 (MWSS-1) of the United States Marine Corps. A few weeks later, on February 20, 1952, it joined the legendary “Flying Nightmares” VMF-513 (N), a naval squadron known for its night attack missions in South Korea.
