In addition to its 60 miles of beaches, boardwalks, tons of restaurants and shops, and attractions ranging from about 90 golf courses to a cool Ferris wheel, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina prides itself on being sensory-friendly.

Here are some of the ways they do this:

*More than 150 local businesses have taken action Sensory Friendly Commitment Create an inclusive environment and train employees to achieve this.

Airport and airline staff, as well as other travelers, know that anyone wearing a sunflower lanyard may need special assistance or extra patience while traveling. The airport also offers quiet room In the baggage claim area, families can decompress before or after their flight.

*Many Myrtle Beach restaurants, attractions and hotels offer discounts and special services to Autism Travel Club members ($10/year). For example, servers at participating restaurants are trained to seat guests in quiet spaces, expedite dining and checkout as needed, and handle potential sensory overload situations with understanding and compassion.

Now, Myrtle Beach has another tool in its sensory-friendly tool kit.

A new children’s book,”Thump thump, thump thump, quack! Find joy in a sensory-friendly vacation,” created in partnership with Visit Myrtle Beach Author and illustrator Lynda Farrington Wilson explores some of the challenges faced by families with children on the autism spectrum.

This book tells the story of Maris the Parrot, who uses her trusty telescope and compassionate heart to guard a family vacationing in Myrtle Beach.
