Looking back at the 2024 UIAA Convention


The 2024 UIAA Congress will be held in Malta on November 8th and 9th, hosted by ClimbMT.

107 representatives from 47 countries attended the event. Guests in attendance included UIAA honorary member and former president Frits Vrijlandt, IFSC president Marco Scolaris and Malta Olympic Committee president Julian Pace Bonello.

In addition to the convention, there were also fall UIAA Governing Council meetings as well as meetings of the Mountaineering Committee, Mountain Conservation Committee, and Youth Committee. After the conference, the UIAA Training Committee and ClimbMT collaborated to host a two-day course on the cliffs of Gozo.

Headlines from the conference include: re-election of Peter Muir as UIAA President, re-election of two Executive Committee members (Amit Chowdhury and Martin Lascano) and election of two new members (Yolanda de Both and Saray Khumalo), hosting of the 3rd Climate Change Conference Summit, panel discussions (dedicated to climbing and hiking, UIAA strategy and committee projects), approval of UIAA strategic priorities for 2025-2028 and the creation of an operational unit (‘World Ice Climbing’) for ice climbing competitions.
