Learn about Peru tourism logistics
Here are Peru FAQs and what you need to know before traveling to Peru!
When to go to Peru
Two weeks is the perfect amount of time to explore some of Peru’s most exciting destinations – it’s a huge country after all, so if you have more time, grab it! Let us introduce when to go.
Peru can be rainy at certain times of the year, so it’s best to visit between May and October during the dry season. The wettest months are January and February, so you may want to avoid booking a trip during these months. Note that the dry season is usually cooler.
If you want to save money, visiting Peru between November and April tends to be cheaper and less crowded, so it’s worth it if you don’t mind a bit of rain.

Weather and climate
Peru generally has a mild climate, sunny weather, and beautiful scenery, but temperatures vary from place to place. Of course, coastal areas are cooler than other areas.
Temperatures here are expected to be between 68 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the Amazon has a warmer climate, with temperatures typically ranging from 84 to 91 degrees. From the Andes to the coast and jungle, know the details of your route first for a more accurate weather forecast.
How to get around
The easiest way to get around Peru is by bus. For reliable and punctual service, use reputed bus companies such as Peruvian hops and south crus.

Peruvian packaging
Before we start our Peru itinerary, you need to know what to pack for your trip! Remember that you will be outdoors all day, so it is best to bring comfortable clothing. Here is a short list of items you should bring with you:
- Comfortable shoes, such as tennis shoes
- Be sure to bring a raincoat or waterproof jacket!
- 2 or 3 warm sweaters (even in summer, it can get cold at night)
- 2 or 3 pairs of trousers
- comfortable t-shirt
- Long sleeve pajamas and thermals for camping
- multiple pairs of socks
- pesticides
- Apply more sunscreen
Peru two-week recommended itinerary
This is my two-week itinerary in Peru based on past experiences.
Day 1: Fly to Lima
To start your 2-week Peru itinerary, fly into Lima Airport and spend the first two nights in the city. You can book a taxi or take a bus into Lima city center.
Spend your first day settling in and resting for the next day’s adventures, or take a walk around town and enjoy your first Peruvian meal.
Here are some great hotels to choose from with top reviews and great locations. (You’ll also notice that even the best hotels here are very affordable!)
Day 2: Lima Highlights
There are many things to see and do when you are in Lima. The best way to experience the city and see all it has to offer is to book a guided day tour. For example, you can book city highlights One day trip Lasts 6 hours and takes you to all of Lima’s must-see historical attractions.

There are also exciting water sports tours such as this one 6 hours cruise Sail on a luxury yacht to the Palomino Islands. Relax on the water, enjoy snacks and drinks as you sail next to the islands surrounding Lima, and you may even have the chance to swim with sea lions!
Day 3: Boat trip to the island
On day three of your two-week Peru itinerary, cruise to the beautiful Ballestas Islands. Several boats depart from Lima that will take you to the islands: I took a PeruHop bus to the town of Paracas as a stop on a longer trip and we bought our tickets at the dock.
Tonight you will stay in Paracas. Just 2 hours from Lima, the atmosphere is low-key. Here are some great accommodation options in Paracas:
Day 4: Huacachina Oasis Dune Buggy and Sandboarding
Get ready for an adventurous day in the desert! Day four will be spent ATVing and sandboarding on the sunny dunes of Huacachina Oasis.
To make the most of your time at Huacachina Oasis, you can book dune buggies and sandboarding group tour. This tour is the best of both worlds, with a stop at a local winery before heading to the dunes for a sandboarding or beach surfing lesson.

Day 5: Travel day to Arequipa
Continue your journey by taking a bus from Paracas to Arequipa. Along the way, be sure to stop at the famous Nazca Lines, ancient pre-Columbian geological symbols etched into the desert sand.
Like other Peruvian cities, Arequipa is full of culture and beautiful natural scenery. You will stay here for three nights. Here are some of the top accommodations you can book for your trip:
Day 6: Arequipa
Day 6 Explore the beauty of Arequipa. This beautiful city has a lot to offer. Start your Arequipa adventure with some delicious Peruvian food! For the best tasting traditional Peruvian cuisine, head to Zig Zag and Chica por Gaston Acurio.
For some non-food related exploration, take Afternoon Panoramic Bus Tour It takes you around the city and shows you stunning 360-degree views. You can also take a stroll around the Old Town and explore the city’s sights on foot.
Day 7: Arequipa
On your last day in Arequipa, take an unforgettable trip to Colca Canyon, the largest canyon complex in the world. Book a full day for easy access to the canyon tour guide Lasting 12 to 15 hours, it takes you straight into the canyon.
Pickup time is pretty early (around 3am!), but when it comes to experiencing these beautiful canyons, the early bird catches the worm.
Day 8: Lake Titicaca
Get ready for another travel day on Day 8 of your Peru itinerary! It’s time to head from Arequipa to Puno. The bus journey is expected to take approximately 6 hours, but luckily you can enjoy the beautiful scenery outside your window.
You can find buses and book tickets here. Keep in mind that there are no trains from Arequipa to Puno.
After arriving in Puno, you must visit the famous Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicaca is one of the largest lakes in South America and is the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long bus trip.

Day 9: Cusco
After exploring Puno and beautiful Lake Titicaca, you’ll travel to Cusco. Cusco is essentially the starting point for visiting Machu Picchu and is filled with exciting history. Once the capital of the Inca Empire, it is now known for its vibrant culture, Spanish colonial architecture and fascinating archaeological remains.
Day 10: Cusco
Relax and explore the historic city of Cusco on day 10 of your Peru itinerary. If you want a great value all-inclusive deal that allows you to explore top tourist attractions, museums and heritage attractions, choose this package travel ticket.

Day 11: Machu Picchu
Get ready for the ultimate Peruvian experience! The next stop on this two-week Peru itinerary is Machu Picchu. You will travel to Machu Picchu and spend a total of 3 nights/4 days here. There are many hiking routes you can choose from, but we recommend Lares, Salkantay and Inca Treks.
To make your hike an unforgettable experience, consider booking a private English-speaking guide like the one I went with Valencia Tourism Cusco. This private tour company is locally owned and provides everything you need for a comfortable camping experience in Machu Picchu (not literally, they even bring a chef and private portable toilets).

Days 12 + 13: Machu Picchu
Explore, hike and relax in the beautiful atmosphere of Machu Picchu on Days 12 and 13 of your Peru trip. Before hiking, be sure to prepare for changing weather, as you can experience sunshine, rain, and hail in a matter of minutes.

Day 14: Fly out of Cusco
It’s time to say goodbye and end this trip of a lifetime. To wrap up your two-week Peru itinerary, you’ll fly back to Cusco from Machu Picchu. If you take the train from Machu Picchu, it will take approximately 4 hours to get to Cusco Airport, so be sure to allow enough time for your flight.
Tips for adjusting your Peru itinerary
if you have Additional days in Peru
If you have extra time, I recommend staying an extra 3 nights on your trip to Peru.
After hiking Machu Picchu, spend a night in Cusco. Or stay 2 more nights so you can visit Rainbow Mountain from Cusco.
Rainbow Mountain is a popular tourist destination for a reason. Admire the colors of this mountain in the Peruvian Andes and learn how they were formed. To fully experience the mountains, book a reservation One day trip It takes you through beautiful views of the mountains and surrounding glaciers.
if you have Spend less time in Peru
If you don’t have 14 days to spare, I recommend ditching Colca Canyon, spending less time in Arequipa (2 nights instead of 3), and skipping Lake Titicaca in Puno. This will shorten your trip to 12 days.
If you have less free time, plan a 10-day trip to Peru, stay one night in Arequipa, and then do the shorter Machu Picchu hike, lasting 2 days instead of 3. Some people even choose to skip hiking all together, Take a train.
Peru is a beautiful country no matter how long you plan to visit! Use this guide as a starting point for your plan or follow it step by step.
