gold rush
Sitting on the mountain overlooking border fallsGold Rush is a Wild West-themed family coaster Drayton Manor.
Unlike roller coasters, Gold Rush offers two different ride experiences, with the coaster switching between two cycles every day at 2 p.m. Depending on the rider, they’ll find themselves moving backwards or forwards along different parts of the track, with the lift hills sometimes acting as spikes.
The ride is well themed, with the mine-themed train traveling through a Wild West style landscape, past barrels, mine shafts and gunpowder storage sheds…what could possibly go wrong there? ! ? While the special effects are a bit cheap, they are much appreciated and add to the overall experience.
Unfortunately, the quality of the themes in the queue varies: sometimes the scenery is beautiful and beautiful, but sometimes on busy days riders may find themselves standing in long wooden tunnels or walking through cattle pens with little to no theme part. The Gold Rush Train theme is also mostly vinyl wrap stickers rather than detailed sculpting.
The coaster itself is smooth, and the tire-driven launch sections are quite punchy – especially the section that launches the triangle car backwards from the storage shed on the morning loop. The corners and hills are nice and add flex rather than strength. Sometimes just being a little faster on certain corners is fine.

Utilizing switch tracks to move the train between various track sections adds to the fun and increases ride time and variety (trains run on certain track sections multiple times – sometimes in different directions). Guessing whether the train will rush over the top of the cable car or slide down like a spike adds to the novelty.
This journey is very reminiscent of the eponymous OK Corral’s Gold RushIn France the journey is shorter but more powerful. While not a replica, after seeing the French version, it’s clear that Drayton’s version isn’t as unique as the hype surrounding a 2024 launch might suggest. Similar ones are Dollywood’s Fire Chaser Express.
Gold Rush is an enjoyable coaster and a great addition to Drayton Manor (especially considering the park’s horrifically gnarly coasters in the past). It’s primarily aimed at the family market, but it’s good enough to entertain adults and children, and the tricks of its different riding cycles make it necessary to ride it again to experience the full range of what it has to offer. Sadly it doesn’t quite match the height of ride experience or theme that other UK theme parks such as Model Park offer to the family market. paulton park.
