What is Dal Palak?
Dal Palak is one of the most popular palak dishes in India, which uses lentils (dahl). A great appetizer 3 course Indian meal.
This healthy vegetarian Indian soup recipe, also known as spinach dal, is a spinach dish in which spinach and boiled lentils are tempered with Indian spices.
Regions where spinach dal is consumed:
- northern india: called dal palak or palak dal
- andhra pradesh: Known as Palakura Pappu
- tamil nadu: Known as Paruppu Keerai Masiyal
- Karnataka: aka Palak Soppina Tovve

Spinach Dal Ingredients
Dal Palak uses a variety of Indian spices and ingredients. Here’s a quick list so you can check your pantry.
- Boil dal
- Oil or ghee (clarified butter)
- Gila (cumin)
- whole red pepper
- minced garlic
- minced ginger
- chopped onions
- turmeric powder
- paprika
- Jeera powder
- coriander powder

- chopped coriander
- Chopped green chilies (optional)

1 cup boiled dal

20 ml oil or ghee (clarified butter)

1 pinch Jeera (Cumin)

2 red peppers, whole

1/2 teaspoon garlic, minced

1/4 teaspoon ginger, minced

1 medium onion, chopped

1 pinch turmeric powder
-
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
-
1 pinch Jeera powder
-
1/4 teaspoon coriander powder

1 medium tomato, chopped
-
1 tablespoon spinach, shredded
-
1 teaspoon cilantro, chopped

1 pinch green chili, chopped (optional)
instruct
- Heat oil.
- Add jeera, whole red chillies, chopped ginger, garlic, green chillies (optional).
- After a few seconds, add chopped onions and sauté until translucent.
- Now add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, jeera powder and fry for few minutes.
- Add chopped tomatoes and chopped spinach.
- After a few seconds, add the boiled dal and bring to the boil.
- Serve hot and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
