The 5 Best Hotels in San Francisco

People walk in sunny San Francisco, with towering downtown in the distance

san francisco one my favorite american city. I always look forward to my next visit. There’s amazing food (especially Asian food) and it’s close to some amazing national parks where you can hike among towering redwoods.

However, it is also one of the most expensive cities in the country due to its booming tech scene. As much as I love coming here, it’s easy to spend all your money here. Especially accommodation. There are plenty of hotels in town, but not all of them are worth staying in (something I learned the hard way).

Since I’ve been visiting San Francisco on and off for over a decade, I’ve stayed in many different hotels over the years. Here is my list of the best hotels in San Francisco to help you plan your trip:

1. Gold Digger Hotel

Paying homage to the building’s 20th-century warehouse roots, everything about this award-winning four-star boutique hotel has a nautical theme. Located on Fisherman’s Wharf, the spacious rooms are all blue and white, with exposed brick walls and wooden beams, and the walls are decorated with large compasses or mirrors shaped like ship windows. Some rooms also offer bay views. Each room features a mini refrigerator and minibar stocked with local favorites, a 50-inch HDTV, and a coffee machine with complimentary locally roasted coffee. The bathroom was a bit small and dated, but the shower had good water pressure (a big plus in my opinion).

The hotel also features a 24-hour fitness center, in-room spa services, and a seafood restaurant where you can enjoy a $15 daily stay credit. The restaurant also serves breakfast in the morning, and while it’s a little pricey (like everything in this part of town), it’s very tasty, with a good selection of omelets, as well as French toast and pancakes. I particularly like the eco-friendly feel of this hotel. They avoid single-use plastics in their rooms, use water-saving systems and even use compost in the hotel’s restaurants. You can also use a free bicycle for pedal-powered exploration. If you’re traveling with your pup, dogs are also welcome at the hotel.

2. Fairmont San Francisco

Located in luxurious Nob Hill, this five-star hotel is an iconic symbol of elegance and luxury. With its unique architecture, this historic hotel has been welcoming guests from all over the world for more than a century. I love the timeless grandeur it exudes, with its opulent décor including marble floors, sparkling chandeliers and ornate furniture.

Rooms are spacious with high ceilings and facilities include flat-screen TVs, desks with built-in USB ports, tea/coffee making facilities and safes. The bathroom is also large, with a marble bath, plush bathrobes and slippers, and free toiletries. The whole place feels like a resort, with a spa, gym and several restaurants (one of which serves a delicious breakfast). Don’t miss the kitschy Tonga Room, a legendary tiki bar in the basement – there’s even a lagoon with a floating stage for bands to play. You have to see it to believe it!

3. Small hotel

I love this French-style three-star B&B on the edge of Nob Hill and Union Square. The decor makes you feel like you’re staying in an old farmhouse, with unique wall patterns, hardwood floors, antique wooden furniture, and fireplaces in some rooms. A free continental breakfast (including pastries, cereal, yogurt, eggs, juice and coffee) is available in the morning, and a happy hour with wine and snacks is available in the evening.

All rooms are spacious and match the hotel’s style, with floral wallpaper, bookshelves, wooden desks and wardrobes, and soft beds. In-room amenities include flat-screen TVs, bathrobes, hairdryers and luxury toiletries. Although the bathroom is a bit small and the shower pressure is a bit weak, these are minor issues because overall the place is super comfortable and unique.

This lovely 3-star B&B is the perfect place to stay in the Mission District, a great area for nightlife and fine dining. It’s located in a classic 1870s Victorian mansion and I loved the atmosphere. The place is full of character, with a grand double living room decorated with woodwork, marble fireplaces, stained glass windows and old photos of the area on the walls. Really beautiful.

All guest rooms are uniquely decorated with antique furnishings and accents, along with modern conveniences such as HDTVs, mini-refrigerators and comfortable beds. All bathrooms are different (some have claw-foot tubs), but all have beautiful tiles and free toiletries. A delicious breakfast buffet is included in the room rate, offering a wide selection of fresh fruit, pastries, quiches, cold cuts and eggs. After a long day, enjoy a glass of sherry, either on the rooftop sundeck or in the hot tub (open 24/7) in the tranquil English garden out back. If you’re looking for a unique place to stay that truly captures the essence of the city’s history, this is the place for you.

As a fan of the Beat Generation (on the road is one of them my favorite travel book), I thought this beatnik-themed four-star hotel was super neat. It really sticks to the literary theme, with a library nook in the lobby, huge quotes printed on the walls, and a writing desk with inspiration boards above each room. I particularly enjoyed the hotel’s moody speakeasy, which hosts poetry readings and serves excellent craft cocktails. You’ll also receive a free glass of sangria upon check-in.

The eclectic rooms are equipped with velvet chairs, pillowtop mattresses, Smart TVs, Nespresso coffee makers, safes and bedside USB sockets. The large bathroom also offers fine free toiletries and luxury bathrobes. I also loved the healthy breakfast options (such as breakfast bowls, smoothies, juices, and cereal with yogurt and fresh fruit) at the hotel’s adjoining cafe. Conveniently located on the border of the Union Square and Nob Hill neighborhoods, the hotel is less than a block from the cable car station and a short walk to the BART station for easy commuting into town.
